What should children take with them when playing sports in summer?
One mother once told me:
“I mix powdered Pocari Sweat with twice the amount of water stated on the package and give it to my child.”
So that it is not too sweet.
So that her child does not consume too much sugar.
So that her child can drink more fluids.
Every family seems to have its own little ideas.
Some people also freeze Pocari Sweat so that it will stay cold for longer.
Both are ways of trying to protect children who exercise in hot weather.
But is it really okay to dilute or freeze Pocari Sweat?
Diluting it does not reduce only the sugar
If powdered Pocari Sweat is mixed with twice the recommended amount of water, the flavor becomes weaker and the sugar concentration is reduced by half.
However, sugar is not the only thing that becomes diluted.
Electrolytes such as sodium, which are lost through sweat, are also reduced by half.
Pocari Sweat is formulated with specific concentrations of sugar and salt to help the body absorb fluids and electrolytes efficiently.
For this reason, the manufacturer recommends preparing the powdered drink according to the instructions on the package.
If you are concerned about its sweetness or sugar content, you could alternate between Pocari Sweat and water or tea instead of drinking large quantities of Pocari Sweat alone.
How much has the child sweated?
How long will they be exercising?
Have they been able to eat properly?
The right drink depends on the situation.
What happens if you freeze regular Pocari Sweat?
A cold drink tastes especially refreshing on a hot day.
If it is frozen before being taken outside, it will remain cold for a while.
However, the manufacturer does not recommend freezing regular Pocari Sweat in its original container.
This is because the liquid expands as it freezes, which may deform or damage the container.
There is another reason: the contents may no longer remain evenly mixed.
The water freezes first, causing the sugar and electrolytes to become unevenly distributed. As a result, the drink may taste stronger as it begins to melt and weaker toward the end.
The concentration of its ingredients can therefore differ depending on when you drink it.
There is also a Pocari Sweat product made to be frozen
In fact, there is a product called “Pocari Sweat Ice Slurry.”
An ice slurry is a sherbet-like drink made from a mixture of liquid and tiny ice particles.
It is designed to be frozen in its pouch, kneaded, and then consumed.
It can be used to help cool the body from within when exercising or working in a hot environment.
However, one pouch contains only 100 grams.
That alone cannot provide all the fluids needed during exercise. It is not a replacement for hydration, but a supplementary product intended to help cool the body.
Although both may look like “frozen Pocari Sweat,” freezing the regular drink is not the same as using an Ice Slurry specifically designed to be frozen.
We want children to drink enough.
We do not want them to consume too much sugar.
We want to protect them from the heat.
Diluting or freezing the drink may be small ideas born from those feelings.
However, changes made with the best of intentions can also alter the original balance of the ingredients.
When the situation calls for it, prepare Pocari Sweat according to the instructions.
When you want to make use of cold temperatures, choose an Ice Slurry designed to be frozen.
For everyday hydration, choose water or tea.
Instead of expecting one drink to meet every need, choose according to the situation.
Even small ideas may be suitable in some situations but not in others.
