🍵Beauty & Taste| Seryo Jaya | I Meant to Order Gyudon… but Chose Oyakodon Instead

Date visited: Wednesday, July 29, 2026

Soon after I started walking through Ohara, one restaurant caught my eye.

Seryo Chaya.

It is a calm, traditional soba restaurant located near the entrance to Sanzen-in Temple.

As it was right around lunchtime, the restaurant was full.

I decided to visit Sanzen-in first and stop by on my way back.

Collage featuring Seryo Chaya in Ohara, Kyoto, with the restaurant exterior, menu, and an oyakodon that was ordered by instinct instead of the planned gyudon.

I had decided to introduce gyudon to international readers,
but… When it was finally time to order,
I instinctively said, “Oyakodon, please.” I couldn’t help smiling at myself.
But that, too, became part of the travel memory.

By the time it was past 1:30 p.m., the lunchtime crowd had begun to settle down, and I was shown to a table for four.

Because the restaurant is located near the entrance to Sanzen-in, it gets busy around lunchtime with temple visitors and tourists.

Since I had already finished my temple visit, I was able to enjoy lunch at a relaxed pace in a quieter atmosphere.

At tourist destinations, simply shifting your meal time a little may completely change the feeling of the same restaurant.

The staff were also kind, and I had a very pleasant visit.

That day, I had planned to introduce gyudon, a dish that is easy for international readers to recognize and enjoy.

But when I opened the menu, I somehow ended up ordering the oyakodon that had caught my attention.

Even I thought,

“I was supposed to order gyudon.”

I couldn’t help smiling at myself.

Haha.

Since this is a soba restaurant, I had fairly high expectations for the dashi.

I thought oyakodon might let me taste the dashi more clearly than gyudon would.

That was part of the reason I chose it.

The oyakodon arrived with sansho pepper on the side, so you can add some if you like.

A small touch that feels very Kyoto.

Now, time to taste it.

For me, the aroma of the dashi was not as pronounced as I had expected, and the overall flavor felt gentle and mild.

I usually prefer dishes that highlight the aroma of dashi and the natural flavors of the ingredients, so that may be why it felt a little different from what I had imagined.

At the same time, I also felt that its soft, understated flavor may be exactly why so many people find it approachable and enjoyable.

Everyone has different tastes.

This impression is based entirely on my own preferences.

I still remember the dashi from the nishin soba I once had at Yamagen near the Philosopher’s Path.

That memory may have made my expectations a little too high this time.

Food is one of the pleasures of travel.

Sometimes it is exactly what you hoped for, and sometimes it brings a new discovery.

That, too, becomes part of the journey.

I enjoyed the meal.

What stayed with me most was being able to enjoy lunch slowly in a calm atmosphere simply because I shifted my visit a little later.

The staff were kind, and I was able to spend a peaceful time there.

If you prefer dishes with a strong dashi aroma and pronounced natural flavors, you may find it a little mild, but I would recommend it to those who enjoy gentle, delicate flavors.
