Date of Visit: February 1, 2026 (Sunday)
I had been walking through the shopping streets for quite a while.
Before I knew it, I had wandered out onto a major road.
That was when something surprised me.
The shopping arcade had been packed with people, yet outside of it there were hardly any restaurants at all.
It was cold.
I was ready for a break.
That was when I found this set-meal restaurant.

After walking through Tenjinbashisuji Shopping Street, I found Machikadoya along a main road just outside the arcade. It felt like a welcome break from the energy of the shopping district. Lunch was a Beef Offal Miso Stir-Fry Set Meal. The unexpected star, however, was the automatic rice refill machine.
The restaurant looked easy to enter.
That alone was enough to convince me.
Inside was a ticket vending machine.
Unlimited rice refills.
The customers were almost all men.
It reminded me of Akamaru Shokudo, another restaurant I had visited in Osaka before.
Rather than a place designed for tourists, it felt like a restaurant for people who work nearby.
At least, that was my impression.
The interior was clean and modern.
It felt like the kind of place where nobody would mind if you stayed a little longer.
I took my seat and waited.
Soon my meal arrived.
The portion looked normal.
A relief.
Then I noticed something.
The rice was shining.
I ordered the Beef Offal Miso Stir-Fry Set Meal.
1,150 yen.
I had expected a much stronger flavor.
But I was wrong.
The taste was surprisingly home-style.
The kind of meal you could eat every day.
Restaurants like this tend to last.

A Beef Offal Miso Stir-Fry Set Meal and an automatic rice refill machine. Press a button and rice appears. It’s fun. It somehow feels like you’re getting a bonus. Then it hits you—this may be the first step toward Osaka’s famous culture of eating until you’re full.
Unlimited rice.
Unlimited pickles.
Self-service tea.
The rice machine even lets you choose the portion size.
Everything is designed to reduce labor costs.
Efficient.
Very Osaka, I thought.
There is a kind of food adventure that is only possible because I work.
On my days off, I walk through a city and stop at a local restaurant.
For me, that is an important way to recharge.

Grateful to still have work, I continue my quest to eat my way through Osaka.
Then I realized something.
I was taking photos, of course.
But while photographing the meal, a thought crossed my mind.
This is not Instagrammable at all.
The restaurant was filled with men.
I had ordered beef offal.
I had even dressed up before coming out.
And this was what I chose.
Well, that’s fine.
Sometimes you simply need to eat what you want to eat.
I looked around the restaurant.
I was the only woman there.
And I had ordered offal.
Quite a scene, really.
I had dressed up for the day.
Yet here I was, happily eating beef offal.
What was I thinking?
Only in Osaka.
Time for a rice refill.
I started with a small portion.
I had no idea how much the machine would serve.
I added some pickled daikon on the side.
This was fun.
But the pickles were saltier than expected.
Then I understood.
They’re designed to make you eat more rice.
And then I realized something else.
This was dangerous.
The rice disappeared.
The offal disappeared.
The pickles disappeared.
Uh-oh.
This was exactly the kind of place where you end up overeating.
Another successful day of eating my way through Osaka.
While eating, I started thinking about the text for a future Reel.
Once again, I had found a temple dedicated to the stomach.
A restaurant full of men.
A plate of beef offal.
Wait.
Had I officially joined the serious food lovers’ club?
As I was thinking that, I heard a woman’s voice.
A couple had just entered.
Apparently there were female regulars too.
That made me feel slightly better.
Before I knew it, I was getting another small serving of rice.
At that moment, my membership in the serious food lovers’ club became official.

While I was sitting at the counter, a young man entered the restaurant.
His meal arrived.
The staff member told him:
“Rice refills are free.”
Really?
Nobody had told me that.
Even though I had already gone back for seconds.
Twice.
Perhaps I didn’t look like the type.
Apparently, quiet madness is difficult to detect.
Then I noticed something else.
The young man appeared to be from overseas.
Did he understand Japanese?
I have no idea.
But perhaps it didn’t matter.
Meal tickets.
Self-service.
Rice.
This restaurant worked through its system before it ever needed words.
I left the restaurant.
Cold again.
Just moments ago I had been warm.
Still, I started walking.
My Osaka Loop Line journey was far from over.
