Visit date: February 18, 2026 (Wednesday)

I entered the tea salon at Fukujuen.

I ordered the seasonal tea soba.

The first thing served was cold karigane tea.

Then came warm hojicha tea.

Outside, it was cold.

That made the warmth of the tea sink even deeper into my body.

When I came here with my father, it was summer.

I remember eating chilled matcha zenzai.

But what felt nostalgic today was not the food itself.

It was the large ceramic piece placed on the table like a placemat.

My father loved it so much that he even visited a nearby workshop to see more.

For some reason, only that scene remains vividly clear in my memory.

The tea soba included chestnuts with their inner skins, ginger, and mushrooms.

No single ingredient stood out too strongly.

Yet each flavor could still be clearly felt.

Very Kyoto-like.

The broth was slightly sweet, so I did not finish it.

Still, it gently softened the sharpness of the fresh ginger.

Different kinds of tea quietly welcome you.

The seasonal tea soba had a gentle Kyoto-style flavor.

Food has a way of bringing memories back.

My father often said:

“Kyoto and France are similar. They both love meat and bread.”

He also used to say that Kyoto people could be a little sharp-tongued.

When he was a child, he was small and often bullied.

In his later years, he began to dislike walking.

But he always loved eating.

That is why the two of us traveled together so often.

It is a little embarrassing to admit, but while eating the soba, my eyes became slightly teary.

Food brings memories back.

Toward Kyoto at dusk.

Walking through Demachiyanagi,
buying mame daifuku,
and slowly calming the mind.
