🍵Beauty & Taste| Shinpachi Shokudo Tenjinbashisuji 6-chome | Even a Food Fighter Has a Weakness for Greasy Food | Osaka Loop Line #3

Date of visit: July 12, 2026 (Sunday)

Once I arrived in Osaka, I planned to enjoy lunch there as well.

At least, that had been the idea.

But I left home later than expected.

My plans for the day included the Mint Museum and the Osaka Museum of Housing and Living.

To visit both, I could not afford to spend too long over lunch.

“I’ll see everything first.”

I had not eaten breakfast either, but I started walking anyway.

Before I knew it, it was five in the afternoon.

Having skipped both breakfast and lunch, I had finally reached the limit of my hunger.

A proper set meal for today’s dinner.
A small glass of beer after a long walk felt like a modest luxury.

I stepped out of the Osaka Museum of Housing and Living.

Across the shopping arcade, I spotted a set-meal restaurant.

I no longer had the energy to walk around looking for somewhere else.

“This will do.”

Or rather:

“This is the only option.”

I headed straight into Shinpachi Shokudo.

Inside, there was only a U-shaped counter.

There seemed to be around twenty seats.

The staff worked from inside the counter, while customers placed their orders using tablets.

It had the easygoing atmosphere of a gyudon chain—a place where someone dining alone could enter without hesitation.

I ordered the ginger pork set meal.

A large serving of meat.

A large serving of rice.

And a small glass of draft beer.

I was hungry.

Perhaps I got a little carried away.

I had no idea yet that this choice would lead to a small tragedy later.

Extra meat and a large bowl of rice.

Meat: Large
Rice: Large
Price: ¥1,430

The ginger pork arrived with mayonnaise on the side.

“Very Osaka.”

That was my first thought.

The meat contained rather more fat than I expected.

But I had eaten nothing since morning.

For now, I would not worry about it.

Or rather, I decided not to worry about it.

A bite of meat.

A mouthful of rice.

Then more meat.

Perhaps hunger really is the finest seasoning.

Inside the Restaurant

When I entered, there was only one other customer.

I thought it was a quiet restaurant.

Then, while eating, I happened to look up and noticed that almost every seat was occupied.

“What?”

When did that happen?

It appeared that two groups had entered without my noticing.

Across from me sat a row of young women in yukata.

Beside me were two older women.

“Wait…”

There were hardly any male customers.

Despite this being a set-meal restaurant, most of the diners were women.

Perhaps that was because the restaurant specialises in grilled dried fish.

There were no foreign tourists in sight either.

Even close to central Osaka, simply choosing a slightly different restaurant can completely change the view from the dining counter.

The older woman beside me talked continuously.

Most of what I heard sounded like complaints.

The woman sitting next to her had fully accepted the role of listener.

Meanwhile, the young women in yukata were each looking at their smartphones.

They barely spoke.

A generation that keeps talking.

A generation that keeps staring at screens.

Within the same counter, time seemed to be flowing at slightly different speeds.

While I was thinking about this, the atmosphere inside the restaurant changed again.

This time, more male customers had arrived.

What had happened to the overwhelmingly female crowd from just a few minutes earlier?

Even within a restaurant, the scenery changes from moment to moment.

🍵 YUMEVOJA Flavor Radar

Ginger Pork Set Meal

Sweetness: ★☆☆☆☆
Saltiness: ★★★☆☆
Dashi Flavor: ★☆☆☆☆
Oiliness: ★★★★★
Spiciness: ☆☆☆☆☆
Aroma: ★☆☆☆☆

Portion size: Large

This rating applies when choosing the large servings of both meat and rice.
These are my personal impressions.

The taste was ordinary.

It was not especially sweet, nor was the dashi particularly strong.

The aroma was mild as well.

The oiliness, however, was unmistakable.

I was so hungry that I continued eating without slowing down.

Large serving of meat.

Large serving of rice.

I finished everything.

The competitive eater had won once again.

…Or so I thought.

Draft Beer

By the time I finished eating, my stomach had started to feel a little heavy.

“Hm?”

The oil was affecting me more than expected.

I drank the beer, hoping it might somehow settle things.

My stomach was full.

But there was an uncomfortable heaviness around my chest.

That was when I realised the truth.

The competitive eater was, in fact, weak against oily food.

I could eat a lot.

I could finish a large serving of rice.

But my stomach remained honest.

Had I not been so hungry, the grilled dried fish set meal might have been the wiser choice.

Ha ha ha.

Even after leaving the restaurant, the heaviness remained.

“I’ll walk.”

I decided to wander toward Osaka Station.

Walking could not immediately erase what I had eaten.

Still, it seemed likely to feel better than sitting still.

What began as a walk to calm the oil in my stomach led me past preparations for the Tenjin Festival and into the ordinary everyday scenery of Osaka.

Travel rarely unfolds exactly as planned.

But an unplanned step can sometimes lead to the next unexpected view.
