My last lunch in Nara.
It’s delicious, so why am I crying?

For My Last Lunch, I Headed Toward the Station
It was my third day in Nara.
I was working again that day.
During my lunch break, I decided to head toward the station.
My last lunch in Nara.
So, what should I eat?
I found
Mekiki no Ginji, JR Nara Station Sanjo-dori Branch.
And outside was a sign:
Limited to 10 servings — Seven-Seafood Rice Bowl, ¥1,000.
Only ten servings.
And they still had one.
All right. I’ll have that.
Seven-Seafood Rice Bowl — ¥1,000
And here it is.
A seafood rice bowl with miso soup.
Salmon roe, sea urchin, shrimp, fish…
All kinds of seafood on top.
Seafood in Nara?
Well, that’s fine.
I’ll eat what I feel like eating.
After all, this is my last lunch here.
Wasabi
Now then.
The seafood bowl came with wasabi.
I’m not very good with wasabi.
And yet—
I put it into the soy sauce.
All of it.
Mixed it.
And then—
poured all of it over the bowl.
…
Why?
Delicious, but I’m Crying
Time to eat.
The seafood is delicious.
But—
it’s hot.
And then—
tears.
Worse still, I had already poured the wasabi soy sauce over the entire bowl.
There was no going back.
Nowhere to escape.
Eat.
Hot.
But delicious.
Delicious, but I’m crying.
And there was the answer to the question at the beginning.
You Don’t Have to Use It All
As I ate, something occurred to me.
With wasabi,
you don’t have to use all of it.
Obviously.
Nobody said,
“Please use the whole thing.”
I put all of it into the soy sauce myself.
I poured all of it over the bowl myself.
And now—
I’m making myself cry.
Well, days like this happen too. Haha.
My Last Lunch in Nara
Even so, I finished the entire seafood bowl.
Thank you for the meal.
Once lunch was over, it was back to work.
And that evening, when work was finished, I would leave Nara.
Three days of meeting the Great Buddha,
walking through Naramachi,
and enjoying breakfast and dinner even on workdays.
Right up to my final lunch,
I made sure to enjoy the food.
Next time, I’ll just be a little more careful with the amount of wasabi.
…Probably.
