I hesitate for a moment in front of the entrance.
I’m not sure if it’s open.
I step inside, taking a chance,
and the air changes.
It is slightly dim and quiet,
a different kind of time flows here, unlike a tourist place.

As I take a seat, I hear conversations.
Nothing special.
Everyday conversations.
Regulars and staff exchange words naturally.
“You were closed the other day, right? I came, but it was shut.”
These small exchanges
create the time of this place.
The floor tiles are slightly worn,
not what you would call “Instagrammable.”
The display case at the entrance
feels less like decoration,
and more like it is simply there.
It may even close irregularly.
Rather than a tourist restaurant,
it feels like a place rooted in the local community.
But,
the service is proper.
And,
by the time I finish eating,
I feel as if I have returned to Kyoto.
There are no chairs for children.
I don’t think there was any English signage.
It is not a place with fully equipped services like typical tourist spots.
But,
I heard that foreign visitors also come.
Within what they can do,
I believe they will respond with care.
It may feel a little inconvenient.
But,
that may be its natural form.
An entrance you might walk past without noticing.
Step inside, and the usual Kyoto is there.

Hexagonal bento.
The presentation is neat.
Each dish is subtle.
The flavors do not stand out.
But,
as you continue eating, you begin to feel at ease.
Not extraordinary,
but a taste that feels like coming back.
■Realization
This place
may not offer
an easy-to-understand “deliciousness” suited for Instagram.
But,
it is a place to return to.
Rather than coming to Kyoto,
it feels like returning to Kyoto.
